Written by Dirk de Villiers, this series focused on the turn of the 20th Century, when Britain invaded
the Transvaal Republic to seize its goldfields. As the war spreads, it follows the story of the Cape
Rebels, defiant Afrikaners imprisoned on St. Helena. Yvonne’s interest was due to her own family
history connecting her to maternal grandparents born in London and paternal grandparents born in
Holland. This realisation led to painting in ‘situ’ during the filming, focusing on the dual nationality
or relationship of the British and the Dutch ‘Boere’ as expressed in the story. 23 pieces, all ink and
watercolour (some unfinished) can be viewed as a collection of a moment in South African pre-
apartheid history.
